As the world watches the Kinetic exchange between US forces and Iran, a quiter, more technical battle is being fought in the waters of the Gulf of Oman. At the heart of this defensive wall is Operation ASPIDES, the European Union’s naval mission, currently under the tactical command of the Italian Navy .
The Flagship: ITS Luigi Rizzo.(595)
Since the escalation on February 28, 2026 , the ITS Virginio Fasan, a FREMM-class ( European Multi-Mission) frigate, has served as the “ Flagship” or command hub for the European fleet.
– The technology: the Fasan is a 6700 ton marvel of engineering. It is equipped with SAAM Aster 15&30 missiles systems, capable of creating a protective bubble against ballistic missiles and drone sworms launched from the Iranian coast.
– The Crew: onboard are approximately 200 highly trained sailors and officers, including specialized MARISTEAR helicopter crews and San Marco Marine Brigade protection teams.
– The Commander : tactical operations are directed by Rear Admiral Filippo Castier ( Force Commander) who coordinates the movements of French, German and Greek I assests from Fasa’s Combat Information Center ( CIC).
Operation ASPIDES: a Mandate of “ Active Defence”
Unlike the US led Operation Prosperity Guardian, which has a mandate for strikes against land based targets, ASPIDES is strictly Defensive.
– The Numbers: the Mission currently deploys 4 to 6 Frontile frigates and destroyers across an area of operations that stretches from the Red Sea to the Strait of Hormuz.
– The Duty: Their primary task is the close escort of merchant vessels. Since the Iranisn Foreign Ministry claims “ Strait is open” while the IRGC ( Revolutionary Guard) litters it with “ smart mines”, the Italian command must navigate a legal and psycological minefield
The “Oman Connection
the 2027 Extention
The Italian Ministry of Defence has recently confirmed the extension of the Mission until February 28, 2027.
Italy is deepening its strategic footprint in the Sultanate of Oman. Specifically using the Port of Duqm as a logistical forward base. This allows Italian ships to maintain high operational tempo without leaving the “Hot Zone”.
Furthermore, the mission is evolving to protect Undersea Data Cables – the invisible nerves of the global economy – which are increasingly at risk of sabotage.
The Strategic “ Wild Card”
While President Trump and Defence Secretary Hegseth report the destruction of the Iranian conventional navy, the asymmetric Threat ( mines, coastal batteries and GPS spoofing) remains. Italy’s role is not to destry but to “ guarantee”.
By maintaining a neutral but heavily armed presence, Italy and its EU partners provide the only credible escort for commercial shipping that refuses to take the long route around Africa.
The Lesson for 2026:
In the modern “Security Reality” power is not just about who can strike the hardest, but who can keep the sea lanes open when the world’s most vital checkpoint is under siege .
Correction : update : the Italian Flagship is not the ITS Virginio Fasan . It has been updated to the ITS Luigi Rizzo to reflect the current mission rotation
