CITY OF THE DEAD
In Cairo, Egypt, this gallery captures life within the City of the Dead, an approximately eight-kilometer-long historic Islamic necropolis that has evolved into one of the city’s most extraordinary residential neighborhoods. Home to an estimated 500,000 to more than one million people, the area reflects a striking intersection of history, survival, and daily life, with many residents living in family burial plots or repurposed mausoleums alongside the tombs of their ancestors. Through these images, the gallery offers a deeply human view of a community shaped by necessity, tradition, and the enduring presence of the past.
